Remember the outrage years ago over that V&A ad campaign for the ace caff with quite a nice museum attached?

The V&A caff, unfortunately, although it looks splendid (at least when there's nobody there) has never been ace and frankly is best avoided unless you are desperate for a sit-down.

But I always think of those ads when I visit the Garden Museum which really does have an ace caff. And a pretty garden where you can have tea. But where the exhibitions are all too often feeble. Yet again, the current exhibition sounds a whole lot better on paper than it is when you get there. Just think of the entrance fee as a levy on eating cake.

Pray you never have a hunger pang at our meagre choice of museums or galleries in the greater Toronto area, Mary. Oh the disappointment! The saddest sandwich packed in cellophane was all that was on offer at the AGO a couple of years back and priced at $8. That sort of thing has been great for business when it comes to nearby eateries though...everyone heads out!

I think my problem is boredom, Darlene. You see the same old cakes wherever you go as the catering is done by the same chains. I want to shake them up - though in fairness none of them are as bad as they used to be! But it's lovely when you come across an imaginative teashop!

Due at the V&A in the next few weeks. Should I pack my own sandwich?

Maybe I'm a bit harsh, Alex. It's just boring and over-priced like most museum food. There's always Pain Quotidien across the road! And Gail's Bakery, not that it's cheap - but the brownies are fab.
